WAKEMED PATHOLOGY LABORATORY RENOVATION
RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA
Integrated Design was commissioned to program and design the renovation of the Pathology Department at WakeMed Hospital’s main campus in Raleigh, NC.
The existing laboratory was a 25,000 square foot collection of separated and outdated departments. Operational inefficiencies and overcrowded spaces inherent with the 30-year-old layout exasperated attempts to incorporate new technology and foster a smooth effective operation. The design challenge was balancing the goals of a functional laboratory with the desire to achieve an environment promoting efficiency and interdisciplinary cooperation.
Constraints from the existing facility would not allow any growth for the department and all of the laboratory functions needed to stay operational continuously throughout the 18 month construction process. The efficiencies developed during the design process netted 18% more usable space without adding any square footage.
Major cost-saving measures were accomplished as a result of the staff preparing for and understanding the construction process, limiting the number of department relocations, limiting the number of construction phases, holding down the need for extensive temporary facilities, and providing needed utilities for future flexibility without overspending for unnecessary capacity. The resulting facility accomplished all of its goals while providing a new laboratory environment at the forefront of 21st-century design.
